Background Information on the Nomination and Endorsement of Our 2026 Democratic Candidates

On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Manassas and Manassas Park voters will elect a U.S. senator, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and three members of their respective city council. City of Manassas voters will also elect three school board members. A special election to represent District 20 in the Virginia House of Delegates will also be held on that date due to the resignation of Delegate Michelle Maldonado effective May 31, 2026.

A statewide voter referendum on remapping Virginia’s 11 Congressional Districts was held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. After that referendum was passed by Virginia voters, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled the referendum invalid due to a technical procedural violation.

A state-run Republican primary election was held on Tuesday, August 4 to select the GOP nominees for U.S. Senate and for the 10th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, there were no Democratic primaries for any 2026 General or Special Election in Manassas or Manassas Park because only single candidates had properly filed for the Democratic nominations for the U.S. Senate (Mark Warner), Virginia’s 10th Congressional District (Suhas Subramanyam), three seats on the Manassas City Council (Dianne Lane, Jill Spall and Helen Zurita), and for the HD-20 vacancy in the Virginia House of Delegates (Sonia Vasquez Luna).

Candidates for Manassas Park City Council (aka Governing Body) and for Manassas City School Board are officially nonpartisan. They cannot be nominated by any political party and must qualify independently to appear on the general election ballot. However, political parties may endorse such candidates, and our committee members voted to officially endorse six candidates for those six available positions on August 19, 2026; namely, Murina Dove, Marcus Still and Lisa Stevens for City of Manassas School Board and Roberto Maldonado Jr, Kevin Moreau, and Maya Miernik for Manassas Park Governing Body.
